THE FOUNDER

In 1974, at the age of 60, Billy Buffett retired. He retired from a Career" of almost 45 year of living the vagabond life of a tramp, derelict, wino and, as he was called by his fellow tramps, "King of the Jungle".

Billy went to the Ottawa Detox Center to sober up for the last time. In Detox, he spoke of his plan to open a "house" for men like himself. He would give them shelter and food in return for abstinence. Of course, everyone was skeptical of the plan because Billy was well known to be a con when it served his purpose.

Billy did exactly what he said he would do. He founded the "House of Welcome" in 1974 and remained sober while he took the House through its growing pains. From James Street - to Fifth Avenue - to its present site in Vanier. Billy accomplished what he set out to do, and stayed sober until his death in November of 1983. His passing was peaceful because he was assured that his house was now "in order" and secure. His "boys" would be looked after.
